Sleepy Babies

In an effort to make sure this batch of baby ducks is as friendly as possible, I have been spending lots of time holding and talking to them. This is a video I shot of two of the Cayuga girls falling asleep on my lap.

Construction Begins...

Today we broke ground on the kennel construction. This is going to be a long road. Stay tuned for updates!

Demo done and the desk skeleton is beginning...

At this point, the baby girls follow me everywhere. Including to the kennel for inspection...

Baby Quackers!!

My cell phone rang loudly at about 6 AM this morning. Half-asleep, I reached for and mustered a "Hello?" Before anyone on the other line said anything, I could hear loud peeping in the background. MY BABY DUCKS WERE HERE! I hopped out of bed and threw on some clothes and raced to the Post Office Annex on McFarland. I honestly was SO excited but didn't really know what to expect.

Having our current ducks had been quite the learning experience. We ended up with four males and one female. As they matured, I quickly realized that was not going to work for the lone female. The boys were just too pushy and she was very outnumbered. I decided it would be in her best interest if we got some more females to provide the boys with a little more "distraction." I ordered six females (3 Cayugas and 3 Buff ducks) from Meyer Hatchery and had them shipped as quickly as possible.

The shipping process is quite unique. The ducks are shipped at one day old, with a heat pack and overnight shipping. When they got here, they have to be taught how to eat and drink by dipping their beaks in food and water.

So for the time being, they six baby girls are in their brooder. They eat, drink, peep and poop (a LOT).

The shipping box.

Finally here!

Father's Day

We went skeet shooting for Father's Day. What a fun time! Since it was Dad-DUH Day, I made sure to include a video of him shooting. Somehow, the guys did much better than the gals this round...guess that means there will be a round 2?

Charles, Mom and Dad (being goofy)
I probably missed this shot (as I only hit ONE out of twenty)
Aunt Valerie

Dad did pretty good!

On The Up and Up

Finn is recovering fairly well. We've had some small setbacks but he is in good spirits. He decided he wanted to lick his staples so we had to deal with some infection. Some pics emailed into the vet, antibiotics called in, and the swelling/infection seems to be going away! He gets his staples out next week...until then, he must wear "The Cone of Shame."

Know Your Backroads

I'm still learning my way around out here but sometimes certain events force you to go outside of your comfort zone. On my way home yesterday with Finnegan from his sugery (optimal timing...let me tell ya) there was some sort of HUGE fire in the roadway. Not something you see everyday! I used my GPS and it took me about twenty extra minutes to get home.

Finnegan's Surgery

In the past eleven months, we have had a total of three TPLO (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy) surgeries between Auggie and Finn. Pitties are prone to tearing their cruciate ligaments and this is one of the surgeries available to help with the condition.

Auggie tore his five weeks apart last summer and Finnegan has now joined the club as well. We headed back to our favorite specialists, Northlake Veterinary Surgury for his surgery. Being the paranoid Mom that I am, I decided to pack up my office and work all day at a Starbucks around the corner from the vet office.

I dropped off Finn about 9 AM this morning and went to Starbucks to set up my office for the day. Did you know that with the Starbucks "Gold Card" you get free refills on coffee? By the time I left there, I had my price per cup down to about $0.50...

Anyways, my Dad met me for lunch as he was in the area for a presite. After he left, I got a call from Dr. Corse, the veterinarian that performed the surgery. He let me know that just after my boy was anesthetized, his heart nearly stopped. Luckily the doctors got his going again and were able to complete the surgery with no further complications. I picked him up a few hours later and brought him home to rest and heal. My sweet boy was looking a little more than pathetic...wish there was more I could do to comfort him.
