Finishing The Guest House

It was down to crunch time. Kristin and Rob had a move in date of July 29th, so we spent almost 3 days straight finishing all the last touched on the guest house. Charles and I worked well into the night for several nights straight just to finish everything from the new light fixtures, appliances, cabinet hardware, plumbing, doors, trim and paint.

These pictures were taken the night of my birthday at about midnight.
We were exhausted but everything got installed that night before sunrise...

Poor Mazda

I have been in love with my Mazda3 since I purchased it back in 2007. Sadly I said goodbye to it this week after a minor fender bender turned into more than that. My insurance company deemed it totalled. It will be sorely missed...

It looks much worse in the pictures. This was after the body shop pulled it to pieces. I was sad to say goodbye.

Hose Time

We've been learning a little more each day about our new alpacas and their personalities. We have discovered that Miss Codi Silver loves nothing more (except food) than hose and sprinkler time. She's even been known to spit at the others that try to come between her and her sprinkler.

The Girls Are Here!

Charles and I decided to take the plunge and get Stud Muffin some friends...Codi Silver and Sweet Melissa! They arrived this morning at 10 AM. Here is a picture of all three, as well as a video and Stud Muffin giving them a not-so warm welcome.

Stud Muffin Is Officially Ours

We drove up to Winder last week to meet some potential new additions to the farm. Our neighbor's alpaca and llama have been living in our front pastures in hopes that they would help control the grass growth. Sadly, Bella, the black llama passed away and poor Stud Muffin was heart broken.

We have been considering adding some new girls for Stud Muffin's brood since alpaca are pack animals. When we would leave him in the pasture in the evenings, you could hear him crying all the way up at the house.

In order to keep him healthy, we purchased him from our neighbors so he is officially ours. First things first, we had to make sure he was healthy. Oddly enough, there aren't many vets around that are familiar with alpacas. We searched and searched and finally found one...an HOUR away in Blue Ridge, GA. I pondered all week about how to get him there because most vets only do house calls when there are multiple animals involved...not just one little ol' Stud Muffin. So after asking around, the vet convinced me to put him in a van. YES, I know at this point you are thinking that's CRAZY. Yes, so was I. But we really had no other options and we were worried about his health. So, lo and behold, we backed up the Computer Movers, Inc van to the barn, haltered Stud Muffin, and walked him right in the van for an hour ride.

He was a little nervous at first, but finally settled in for the ride. Once there, our vet gave him a clean bill of health and a lot of great info for first-time alpaca parents, like us. On the way home, we even took him through the Chick-Fil-A drive thru...now that was humorous.

So now that Stud Muffin is healthy as a horse (?), stay tuned...he may be getting some new friends soon!

Rough Week For the Ducks

It's been a rough week for the adult ducks. Our female mallard decided to leave the barn and fly away. We suspected this would happen as mallards are wild and most tend to do this.

We didn't, however, expect what happened yesterday afternoon. On the way to my parent's house, I saw a hawk attacking our ducks. I ran as fast as I could, but the hawk had already killed two of my male runner ducks. I chased the hawk away and rescued Gary, the lone runner duck who was next on the hawk's list. Poor Gary was so stressed and scared. Ace, the other male mallard, was pretty safe because he can fly and flew to the other side of the fence. Gary was caught in the corner and the hawk was taunting him before I got there.

I cried a few tears and got Gary and Ace locked up safely in the barn. I checked back on them later to make sure poor Gary was able to calm back down. They seemed to get over the terrifying ordeal by that night but I'm sure they are still a bit shaken up. I'm not sure what the next chapter will bring for them, but I do know that I will do everything in my power to keep them safe.
